Harrison powers Hawks past Brock

WATERLOO, Ont. (January, 7, 2012) – The Wilfrid Laurier men’s basketball team (9-1) continued their amazing season with a big 93-70 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday.

Kale Harrison of Stratford, Ont., led his team with 24 points in a dominating performance by the Golden Hawks.

Laurier grabbed the lead in the first quarter thanks to a 13-4 run halfway through the opening frame. Laurier was helped by Brocks 16 first half turnovers and opened up a 24 point lead at half, going into the locker room with a 54-30 lead.

With Laurier letting their bench get some time on the floor Brock outscored the Hawks 40-39 in the second half, but Laurier’s str ong first half led them to an easy 93-70 win.

Laurier leads the OUA West with nine victories, and their win against Brock was attributed to the four players that scored in the double digits. Harrison had four three-pointers to help with his 24 point effort, while Matthew Buckley of Waterloo, Ont., had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Patrick Donnelly of Oakville, Ont., and William Coulthard of Oakville added 13 and 11 points respectively. Donnelly also posted a game-high 12 rebounds.

Brock was led by Michael Williams of Brampton, Ont., who registered 23 points in 18 minutes off the bench going 9-for-12 from the field and 5-for-7 from three-point land. Sophomore Jameson Tipping of Orangeville, Ont., added 10 points in the loss.

Laurier’s defensive effort allowed them to attempt 35 more shots than the Badgers going 35-for-90 (38.9%) from the floor and 30.3% (10-for-33) from three-point range. Bro ck was 45.5% (25-for-55) from the field and 64.3% (9-for-14) from beyond the arc.

Laurier hosts Lakehead (9-1) in a big conference game on January 15 at 8 p.m.. Brock’s next game will be against the McMaster Marauders on January 11.
