WATERLOO, Ont. (January 13, 2012) – Two members of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks football team were named to Team World on Friday for the third annual International Bowl set to take place in Austin, Texas on February 1.
Safety Chris Ackie of Cambridge, Ont., and linebacker Andrew McWhinnie of Waterloo, Ont., were among the 24 remaining players that were named to the 46-man roster by Team Canada head coach Greg Marshall.
Ackie, a rookie safety who dressed in all nine games, starting six of those, had 17 solo and seven unassisted tackles in his first season at Laurier. He also contributed three solo and two assisted tackles in the Hawks lone playoff game.
As for McWhinnie, he was one of 21 players who committed to play for Laurier when the team announced its first wave of recruits in December. He graduates from Sir John A. MacDonald High School in Waterloo this spring after helping his team capture the Waterloo County Secondary School Athletic Association (WCSSAA) Championship in the fall and earning the Doug Shuh MVP Award for his play in his final season.
Ackie and McWhinne will join current Laurier receiver Alex Anthony of Victoria, B.C., as the only Golden Hawks to have competed in this event.
